The non-vintage Elyssia Pinot Noir is mechanically harvested at night to enhance the aromas and spends a minimum 10 months in bottle before disgorging. Lucid pink in colour, it has a simple, lifted bouquet of red cherry and raspberry fruit. The palate is fresh and lively with ebullient Morello and fresh strawberry, exhibiting good weight in the mouth, although it needs more tension towards the finish. Drink now. Like its archrival Codorniu, Freixenet is associated with commercial Cava that sells in staggering quantities around the world, the go-to choice for consumers who want bubbles without Champagne's price tag. However, for this report I have focused upon their lesser-known premium range that is surprisingly diverse. I must confess that when they did pour their most popular label, it only served to illustrate the gulf in quality.
